American Indian Land Acknowledgements at Arts Midwest

Arts Midwest, one of six nonprofit regional arts organizations in the United States, invited the CAIRNS director to present to its Board of Directors during a meeting in Minneapolis. The Board’s main interest centered on land acknowledgements. The presentation briefly discussed some fundamental facts, such as the difference between Americans with American Indian ancestry, and Americans who are also citizens of American Indian tribes; the difference between tribes and reservations; the difference between citizens of a tribe, and residents of a reservation; and the difference between federally recognized tribes, and states of the United States. The talk also shared three distinct philosophies within American Indian sovereignty, suggesting that land acknowledgements could be tailored to each one.
