Winter Counts and Star Knowledge

The second presentation the Oglala Sioux Tribe Clinical Laboratory invited the CAIRNS director to present on was Lakotan Winter Counts and Star Knowledge. Swift Dogs winter count, which served as the foundation for the presentation, includes glyphs of comets and of individuals with celestial names, such as One Star and Black Moon. In the image above, from top left to bottom right, the four glyphs are for the years Wichahpi wan Hoton Hiyaye (1821-22), Wichahpi wan Ile Yahe (1909-10), Wichahpi Wanjila T’e (1903-04), and Wisapa T’e (1888-89).
