What South Dakotans Should Know About American Indians

Deadwood was the location for the South Dakota Medical Group Management Association’s fall conference. The CAIRNS director was invited to share with conference attendees an early afternoon presentation titled, “What South Dakotans Should Know About American Indians.” In the photo, attendees are looking at the slide saying “Tribes are Political Entities” as opposed to racial, ethnic, cultural, or minority groups. None of these or similar groups sign treaties with the United States of America. The USA signs treaties with nations. American Indian tribes are nations and have citizens. Calling these citizens “enrolled members” diminishes the sovereignty of the tribes. Groups have members. Nations have citizens.
