Rent is Due

This week’s CAIRNS Etanhan Wotanin column suggests that the Black Hills settlement money could be viewed as a down payment on past due rent for the use of 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty land and the extraction of resouces. The column, “Rent is Due,” can be read now by clicking here or later this week in the Lakota Times newspaper. The image above is an excerpt from the High Dog winter count. The circled glyph is a representation of the Black Hills and was titled “Paha Sapa ominiciye” (Black Hills meeting) for the year 1912-13.
