Teach for American at American Horse School

This morning a CAIRNS team traveled from our office in Lacreek District to American Horse School in Pass Creek District of Pine Ridge Reservation. Teach for America invited CAIRNS there to conduct a training for selected schoolteachers in Rosebud and Pine reservations. The session, “Four Things Everyone Should Know about American Indians,” was organized into four sessions: Tribes are Political Entities Higher Than States, American Indians Have Lost Nearly All Their Land, Tribes are Different Than American Indian Persons, and Language Is Sort of Revolutionary. In the photo above, one of the small groups is grappling with locating the nine reservations on the official South Dakota highway map. The reason is that the map purposefully does not depict two of the reservations and incorrectly depicts the size and shape of another.
