Lakotan Time and Astronomy at Badlands Observatory

This evening’s presentation examined Lakotan conceptions of time beginning with night, day, a month, and a year. It also showed the difference between “Indian history” and “tribal histories” before delving into the unique characteristics of Lakotan winter counts. A couple puzzles were incorporated into the talk, which was organized into three segments so attendees could alternate between indoor (warm) activities and outdoor (chilly) viewings of the night sky with and without telescopes. Attendees are in the photo above, along with the co-owners of Badlands Observatory, Ron (far right) and Teresa (seventh from right).
