Allotment Stakes and Land Descriptions

Students from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, visited Wingsprings today. The CAIRNS Director led a guided tour of Wingsprings before the students took the Lakota Assessment, a testing tool developed by CAIRNS to assess basic knowledge of Lakotan history and culture. After lunch, the CAIRNS director presented information on land descriptions, allotment, and the two land statuses in reservations: Indian trust and deeded. Students then participated in an allotment activity that involved finding allotment stakes and recording the information on them. Professors Harvey Markowitz and Joseph Guse accompanied the students.
