Mato Tipila at Bear Lodge

Devils Tower National Monument was the first national monument established in the United States. The year was 1906. The name had no factual reference. The earliest maps by U.S. cartographers identified the unique landmark as “Bear Lodge”. The CAIRNS director was invited by the National Park System to present at an evening event near the base of the amazing monolith. His talk covered the naming issue and also Lakotan narratives tied to that place.
