Bismarck, North Dakota, was the site of the 27th Annual United Tribes Technical College’s Tribal Leaders Summit. Tyler Young, a former research assistant at CAIRNS, and the CAIRNS director were in Bismarck for the summit. Their talk, “Presenting Tribal Nations: Creating Educational Resources About Tribes,” argued that the misunderstandings held by many Americans and the misinformation present in much of the public discourse around tribes and their citizens can be tied to a lack of basic education about modern Native nations. During their session, attendees tested their own knowledge of tribes through a written Native nations assessment and learned about the work and challenges that go into creating such tools.
