In and Out of Place at the Brown Center for Digital Scholarship
Thursday, February 27, 2025
Lukas Rieppel and the CAIRNS director presented a collaborative project created with Brown University’s Center for Digital Scholarship. The project’s focus is Lakotan lands from Long Ago to Today. In addition, it incorporates the infamous 1874 expedition into the Black Hills that was led by George Custer. Last summer, Rieppel and the director wrote a series of eleven weekly “dispatches” that were timed to coincide with the weeks that the expedition was “out of place” one hundred and fifty years ago. The image above is of the landing page of the project. The plus-signs are the seven Lakotan sacred sites, the circles are towns, the squares are forts, and the lines delineate the three land statuses stipulated in the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty.
