The CAIRNS director was invited to present at an evening event near the base of the amazing landmark known as Mato Tipila in Lakotan, Bears Lodge on all the earliest maps by U.S. cartographers, and Devils Tower ever since 1906 when it was the first national monument established in the United States. The image above is of a segment of the talk that suggests that the reason the landmark known as Devils Tower and the constellation known as Gemini have the same name in Lakotan—Mato Tipila—is that there is a location where when the constellation sits on the western horizon, its shape mirrors the landmark’s and the two shapes represent the horns of a buffalo rising out of the earth.
