Second Astronomy Workshop at Wingsprings

Saturday, September 6, 2025

CAIRNS hosted our second astronomy workshop this evening, September 6. A dozen attendees were invited to a ninety-minute event with hands-on activities, close observations, and an illustrated and annotated presentation focused on the Big and Little Dippers. Astronomonical and Lakotan viewpoints were incorporated. Peri, Janet, Tyler, and the CAIRNS director facilitated the workshop. In the photo above, one of the three groups is conducting a critical thinking exercise about the rate of apparent rotation of stars. Using a protractor, geometry, and the time and position of the Big Dipper, they calculated the time given a new location of the Big Dipper. [A fuller description of the workshop can be found here]
