Dark Skies Panel at Rapid City Public Library

Badlands National Park Conservancy (BNPC) organized a panel discussion at the Rapid City Public Library to discuss the ongoing initiative for Badlands National Park to be certified as a Dark Sky Sanctuary. The CAIRNS director was on the invited panel along with Marissa Marshall, the BNPC Executive Director, Carrie Gerlach, founder and owner of Black Hills Adventure Tours, Michaela Lavender, director of the Wall Chamber of Commerce, Peggy Norris, formerly with the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and Ed Welsh, paleontologist and ranger at Badlands National Park. In advocating for certification of Badlands National Park as a Dark Sky Sanctuary, BNPC highlights Lakota star knowledge as a cultural component. CAIRNS supports this endeavor, its director said, along with the fervent hope that American Indians be involved in every aspect of the initiative, not merely in the cultural storytelling component.
