CAIRNS Returns to Inestimable Gift Cemetery
This morning, four cousins gathered again at the Inestimable Gift Cemetery to clean the grounds, mow the grass, and trim around each of the headstones. Some of their ancestors are buried in the cemetery. Their common ancestors are Amos and Lucy Ross, whose headstone is pictured in the photo above, which was taken at 11:20 after the cousins’ work was done. Loosely transcribed, the text on the headstone reads: "Amos Ross, born January 5, 1853, died May 2, 1942. Lucy Gayton, his wife, born February 7, 1860, died April 30, 1932. Missionaries from Santee, Nebraska, to the Pine Ridge Sioux Indians since 1890.” Lucy and her husband were instrumental in Episcopal missionary work in the newly established reservation. Eight of their nine children are also buried in the cemetery.
