Memorial Tribute to Reverend Amos and Lucy Ross
Amos and Lucy Ross, from Santee, Nebraska, were the first Dakotan Episcopalian missionaries to Pine Ridge Reservation. Descendants of their daughter, Angelique, and her husband, John Howe, co-sponsored this morning’s breakfast at the annual Niobrara Convocation that was first held in October of 1870 in Santee Agency, Nebraska. This year’s convocation was hosted by Pine Ridge Episcopal Mission at St. Michael’s in Batesland, in the Wakpamni District of Pine Ridge Reservation. The descenants printed a pamphlet documenting the lives of Amos Ross and Lucy Gayton, and five of them read it at the morning meeting following breakfast. The full text of the pamphlet is available here.
